The Washington Commanders have been busy this week. Over three weeks into training camp, the bumps and bruises have started to mount. Fortunately, the Commanders haven’t dealt serious injuries, but their depth is being tested.
This week, Washington has made several roster moves, including releasing a former draft pick. The Commanders also signed three defensive backs and a wide receiver. Washington is still looking for help.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Commanders had worked out veteran offensive tackle George Fant, and the two sides will remain in contact. Fant, 33, is a nine-year veteran who has played in 101 career games with 75 starts. Fant spent his first four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, then three with the New York Jets, one year with the Houston Texans, before returning to Seattle in 2024.
Fant wasn’t the only veteran offensive lineman Washington brought to Ashburn for a visit.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network said the Commanders worked out Cameron Fleming.
Fleming, 32, is an 11-year pro with 118 games played and 62 starts. He began his career with the New England Patriots (2014-17), before spending two years with the Dallas Cowboys, one year with the New York Giants and the previous four seasons with the Denver Broncos. Like Fant, the Commanders are expected to remain in contact with Fleming.
Left guard Brandon Coleman has missed some time recently and right guard Sam Cosmi is continuing his rehab after tearing his ACL in January. Cosmi is expected back earlier than expected, but Washington’s depth is being tested in training camp.
Laremy Tunsil and either rookie first-round pick Josh Conerly Jr. or Andrew Wylie are Washington’s projected starting tackles. The Commanders have several tackles in camp, including Trent Scott, Bobby Hart, Tyre Phillips, and Foster Sarell, all vying for one spot. All have extensive NFL experience, with Scott and Sarell having guard/tackle flexibility like Wylie.
Fant or Fleming could be a good depth signing if Washington goes that route. Wylie has lined up at tackle and guard throughout training camp.
