What does the future for the Houston Texans look like surrounding their stay at NRG Stadium?
As of now, owner Cal McNair stated on Monday that they’re happy remaining with the building through the end of their lease in 2029 and would like to renew with renovations are made. While the stadium should remain intact, Houston would like a new practice facility and team headquarters, one that isn’t located directly inside the stadium they call home.

New Texans team president Mike Tomon echoed what the McNairs have suggested during a media meeting on Monday at River Oaks Country Club: the franchise’s current stadium setup is outdated and needs a facelift.
“A lot of what we talked about is a world-class experience for our fans,” Tomon said. “That comes to down to everything that supports that. You think about the stadium, you think about the team, you think about the practice facility.
“We know we have areas we’re not world class at this stage. So that’s been a focus, that’s been a drive.”
Nothing is set in stone yet regarding the short or long-term future with the Texans at NRG Stadium. Even with talks of a new practice facility in the works, that would take at least several years to officially become more than just a dream on paper.

“Where we wind up with the practice facility, I’m not really quite sure yet,” McNair said. “We have a lot of great options and we’ll sort through that sooner rather than later.”
. Now, it comes down to deciding where the best location is for a plan to become finalized “sooner than later,” though the new facility still would remain in the Greater Houston area
“There are very few stadiums that are used the way that we use our stadium and share it with the county and the rodeo,” Hannah McNair said. “So there’s not really much time to do everything we need to do in that building.”
Tomon, who previously helped with the engagements of NFL venues such as SoFi Stadium, Allegiant Stadium, Highmark Stadium and The Star in Frisco, could look to build a complex similar to that of the Dallas Cowboys. One point both Tomon and the McNair emphasized was creating a “district” that features more than just a practice feild and locker room.
The hope is not to copy ‘The Star’ but rather to provide a similar first-class facility for the players that could offer a more open feel to the community.

“The value that the Texans can bring to a community, we really see that there’s a great way that we can impact a community in a great way,” Tomon said. “To make sure that it’s a destination, it’s an asset for the community for the folks who are there, and with that comes revenue opportunities.”
