EAST RUTHERFORD − It’s getting late early for the New York Giants as they enter the home stretch of the preseason, beginning with Saturday night’s exhibition against the New York Jets.
The regular season opener slated for Sept. 7 in Landover, Md., against the Washington Commanders is 22 days, and while that may seem like a lot of time, within the NFL calendar, it’s really not.
By my count, the Giants have only two preseason games and four practice days remaining – including this one against the Jets – before the final cuts are due leaguewide on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

All teams must be down to 53 players by 4 p.m. on that Tuesday. Typically, it’s a tough spot to practice that day – teams will, but you usually don’t want to put players who will be waived or released in harm’s way on the field.
What that means: if you are a Giant on the roster bubble, if you don’t have a spot locked up, there’s work to do and not a lot of time left to do it.
