PHILADELPHIA, P.A. — Kyle McCord is looking to stick in Philadelphia.
The sixth-round draft pick has found himself in a battle for the third quarterback spot on the Eagles’ 53-man roster.
With reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee locked into the starting and backup roles, the former Syracuse star is vying against veteran Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the third QB spot on the depth chart.
McCord has struggled to make the most of his limited opportunities in the preseason.
In Saturday’s preseason game against the Browns, McCord and Thompson-Robinson alternated after two drives each for the Eagles. Neither seemed to distance himself from the other.
McCord completed 8 of 16 passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. His longest completion was the nine-yard pass on third-down to Ainias Smith for the score. McCord also threw an interception in the fourth quarter that was erased by a Browns penalty.
Thompson-Robinson went 5 for 8 with 17 yards and an interception.
As a whole, the Eagles put up just 88 yards of total offense in a 22-13 loss to Cleveland.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t seem particularly thrilled with the performance of either after the game.
“It was just not complementary football today,” said Sirianni when asked to evaluate the quarterback play.
“The defense had some long drives, the offense had some three-and-outs, and you want to be able to play complimentary football in that area. I have to watch the tape, obviously, they had some good moments, they had some plays that they made, but also, we missed some plays.”
“That’s not always just on the quarterback, if there was a missed play, but I’ll have to go watch the tape,” said Sirianni. “It wasn’t good enough.”
McCord completed just one of five passes and threw a pick in the Eagles’ first preseason game against the Bengals.
The Philly-area native has one more chance to convince the Eagles that his upside is worth a spot on the 53-man roster.
Philadelphia will play it’s final preseason game on Friday, August 22nd against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
