QB Adrian Martinez could get the bulk of the snaps for the Jets. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor recently had a minor arthroscopic procedure on this knee and the Jets are hopeful their backup is ready for Week 1. Rookie Brady Cook didn’t take team reps Wednesday after having his ankle stepped on during Tuesday’s session. Cook, though, is expected to play.
With the Giants rolling out a line that features Lawrence and veteran edges Bruns and Kayvon Thibodeaux plus the freaky Carter, the Jets already got in a good couple of days of competition. But Glenn may want to see Fields direct his unit in game action to complete the week.
“Just good work and a little more of a competitive atmosphere going against different people,” said RB Breece Hall of the matchup. “It’s good to just go against some more of your peers and get a different look, go against different body types, different people, and come together as a real team and be going against another opponent.”
If the Jets elect to use their defensive starters, several regulars could be out of the lineup. DT Quinnen Williams (calf) and DL Jermaine Johnson (ramp up) won’t suit up and the Jets could take a cautious approach with CB Sauce Gardner (calf soreness).
“We’re just getting ready for the game at the end of the day,” said MLB Jamien Sherwood. “I feel like as a whole, we just need reps in general. It’s a new scheme, it’s a new defense, new coaches. For us to perfect our craft, all it takes is reps. That’s what we need most regardless of if it’s in the game or it’s at practice. If Coach wants us to go out there and get reps, we will. Obviously, the player within us wants to play, but you know we have 17 games, so it’s about being smart and knowing what’s best. Again, these practices have been very beneficial for us, and I feel like we’ve been getting better with our communication and with our execution. But again, that’s all in Coach’s hands.”
Regardless of that decision or the outcome Saturday night, Glenn will stick to the plan with his team and his quarterback.
“Nothing changes with that guy, I’m just telling you right now,” Glenn said of Fields. “He’s always going to be Steady Eddie, and nothing takes him too high, nothing takes him too low. He just stays above board and continues to work. That’s the good thing about him — that’s the trait that you don’t see with a lot of people in general. But for a quarterback to have that trait, it is outstanding. It doesn’t matter. Whatever happens, he’s going to continue to work.”
