The only thing that matters during the preseason is getting out of these games healthy. We didn’t need to see the San Francisco 49ers’ starters for more than a series. However, Dominick Puni did not come out with Connor Colby and Spencer Burford, a couple of other offensive linemen who started the game.

The team reported that Puni was ruled out with a knee injury after a series of his leaving. We don’t want to speculate on what the injury is without having all of the information. However, nothing good has ever come from a player being ruled out within minutes of having a knee injury. You can see Puni, the right tackle, get rolled up on during this field goal attempt below:

Puni is already the second-best offensive lineman on the roster, and that was true by the fourth game of last season. He was expected to take another step this season and potentially become a Pro Bowl-caliber player. We’ll have updates as soon as the team provides them about Puni’s injury. We’ll also try to add the play where Puni might have suffered an injury.

Running back Patrick Taylor went down with a shoulder injury. He was officially questionable to return. And on the next drive, running back Corney Kiner looked to be holding his ankle after a long gain. He’s receiving medical attention and was down on the field. Kiner ended up leaving on a cart and was immediately ruled out.

Three injuries in a quarter. You could not ask for a worse start than that from a 49ers’ perspective.

Kyle’s update, 3:28 p.m. PT: Jennifer Lee Chan tweeted out a video of Puni sitting on the sidelines:

As you can see, Puni doesn’t have any wraps or crutches around him. Hopefully, this is a sign that Puni’s tests were negative and he’ll be ready for the regular season.

Kyle’s update, 4:12 p.m. PT: Jennifer had another update on Puni postgame, and he looked to be limping heavily and trying to avoid putting any pressure on his leg:

As you can see, Puni’s right knee isn’t bending. Kyle Shanahan spoke after the game. Puni will miss “a few weeks” with a “possible PCL” injury, according to Shanahan. Patrick Taylor will be out for a couple of weeks with a dislocated shoulder. Corey Kiner “most likely” has a high ankle sprain and is also expected to miss a few weeks.

Shanahan said those were tough injuries to deal with, but “they won’t be out forever. Hopefully, they heal up fast.”
