Last week, numerous former Colorado Buffaloes made a strong impression in their NFL debuts, earning national headlines and quickly becoming fan favorites in their new homes.
With stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter missing Week 2 with injuries, this week was much calmer for the Buffs alums. However, several continued to make strong impressions with the playing time they received, while others saw a bit of regression. Here’s how every former Buffalo performed in their second week of NFL action.
WR Xavier Weaver
Statline: 1 catch for 17 yards, one kick return for 31 yards
By far, the best performance of any of the former Buffaloes, Weaver continues to impress in the desert. After catching a touchdown last week, Weaver made a nice catch for a chunk gain and showed off his special teams prowess yet again. With the Cardinals looking for more targets for Kyler Murray and a strong special teams outing, Weaver’s chances of making the 53-man roster are trending up.
S Shilo Sanders
Statline: 2 tackles
Sanders’ outing against the Steelers wasn’t his best, as his tackling regressed from the booming hits that he delivered in the first week. Although he missed two tackles, Sanders made two more and still showed off his impressive ability to find the ball in the run game. The Buccaneers are hurting at the safety position, with numerous injuries forcing starters to miss time, so there’s still plenty of time for him to earn playing time.
WR Jimmy Horn Jr.
Statline: 1 catch for 1 yard, one rush for 6 yards
Horn didn’t get many looks this game, with his catch coming on his only target of the game, but he has continued to impress the Panthers faithful with highlights at practice. Horn didn’t get significant playing time until the fourth quarter and didn’t see any action on special teams. When he did see the field, his agility and speed were on full display, presenting numerous opportunities for the Panthers to use him in unique ways.
WR LaJohntay Wester
Statline: 0 catches on four targets, two punts fielded
After having the best debut of any former Colorado Buffalo, Wester’s second week of NFL action was one to forget. The highlights of his action against the Cowboys were getting hit while faking out the defense on punt return and being the target of a bad throw and eventual pick-6 by Cooper Rush. Throw in a drop earlier in the game, and Wester had a nearly opposite performance in Week 2.
WR Will Sheppard
Statline: Did not record a stat
Sheppard had a nice debut last week, catching two passes for 20 yards, but he only saw the field for 15 snaps against the Indianapolis Colts. In that time, he was neither targeted nor heavily involved in the offense’s production. It’s looking unlikely that Sheppard will make the Packers’ 53-man roster with a packed wide receiver room, but he’s got another week to show out and earn a spot on another NFL roster.
DE BJ Green
Statline: 1 tackle, one quarterback hit
Green didn’t see action in this one until the second half, but had another respectable outing for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has shined when rushing the passer, finding his way into the backfield for the second straight week, and racking up quite a few sacks in practice. Green got pressure on potential Saints starter Spencer Rattler as well, a nice boost for the former Buffalo.
QB Shedeur Sanders
Statline: Did not play
After the debut heard round the world, Sanders missed the second week of NFL action with an oblique injury that he suffered in a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles. Cleveland started fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, but Sanders has said he’ll be back in Week 3.
WR/CB Travis Hunter
Statline: Did not play
Hunter missed practice on Friday with an upper-body injury that held him out of the Jaguars’ second preseason game. Jacksonville’s head coach, Liam Cohen, said that Hunter’s absence from the game was for “precautionary reasons.” It’s unknown whether he’ll suit up for the Jaguars’ final preseason game on Aug. 23.
