The Green Bay Packers rested 29 players and fell behind 13-0 to the Indianapolis Colts in the first half, but an inspired second-half performance and a late touchdown drive engineered by Sean Clifford helped the Packers escape Lucas Oil Stadium with a 23-19 win in the second preseason week.

After a review of the tape, here are the studs and duds coming out of the Packers’ preseason win over the Colts:

Studs

LT Jordan Morgan: Another quality performance manning the left tackle spot against starters. An easy mover with good feet, Morgan hasn’t allowed a pressure this preseason. The Packers were particularly pleased with his snaps against Colts defensive end Laitau Latu.

LB Ty’Ron Hopper: On one play in the first half, Hopper beat the reach block of the right guard, worked down the line of scrimmage and stuffed the running back for a loss. The second-year linebacker has looked assignment sure both against the run and in coverage over two preseason games.

WR Julian Hicks: No. 81 would have been an obvious standout from the box score if not for penalties. He had an incredible 31-yard catch along the sideline and a 14-yard catch converting a first down negated by penalties. Later, Hicks made a contested catch for a first down.

P Daniel Whelan: All three of his punts ended up inside the 20-yard line. The only punt returned resulted in a 3-yard loss, and his 59-yard punt flipped the field and pinned the Colts inside the 10. His net punting average was over 50.

CB Micah Robinson: The rookie wasn’t targeted in coverage, and he was in on two tackles covering kicks or punts on special teams.

RB Amar Johnson: He powered through multiple tacklers on his way to a 9-yard touchdown run, caught an 11-yard pass and handled business on both of his pass pro snaps.

Duds

RT Anthony Belton: He committed an incredible five penalties in the first half, including four that can be safely categorized as controllable: a false start, two illegal formation penalties when he lined up incorrectly on the line of scrimmage, and a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty after hitting an opponent from behind and late. Making matters worse, Belton also gave up a team-high five pressures in pass pro. The flashes are there. But this was a poor performance from a 24-year-old second-round pick who played a lot of football at the college level.

LB Isaiah Simmons: It’s becoming more clear why a former top-10 pick was available in free agency deep into the offseason. Simmons might be big and fast, but he’s routinely out of position and surprisingly unreliable in coverage. On the first series alone, Simmons misread a boot action and gave up a big play, and rookie Tyler Warren roasted him in coverage for what should have been a big play. He also reacting late in zone coverage on an easy completion, got pancaked at the point of attack by Quenton Nelson, missed a tackle in the hole on a running back, and failed to finish a tackle covering a punt. Simmons has played a team-high 88 defensive snaps this preseason, so the opportunities have been there. It’s just unclear if it’s going to click for Simmons in time to make the team.

LG Donovan Jennings: The second-year offensive lineman looked overmatched against the Colts starters. He gave up three pressures, including a quarterback hit on a third down, and his holding penalty negated a big play to Julian Hicks. His performance evened out against backups, but as a starter at left guard, Jennings missed a big opportunity to prove he can handle blocking starting-caliber players.

RB Emanuel Wilson: His 32-yard catch was an impressive individual play, but Wilson also carelessly lost a fumble and got beat for a sack in pass pro. The Packers need more reliability out of a young player competing for snaps behind Josh Jacobs.

K Mark McNamee: The international rookie missed a 39-yard field goal and an extra point.
