The NCAA announced on Friday the punishment for Michigan football’s sign-stealing scandal. The Wolverines were accused of using improper methods to obtain opponents’ signs. Former Michigan Wolverines staffer Connor Stalions was the man believed to be behind the operation.

On Friday, the NCAA announced the punishment.

The NCAA announced that Michigan has been hit with a series of fines that could reach $30 million, while head coach Sherrone Moore has been hit with a two-game suspension and a show-cause penalty. The NCAA also announced an eight-year show-cause penalty for Stalions and a 10-year show-cause for former coach Jim Harbaugh.

But is that enough?

Cardale Jones, who led Ohio State to a College Football Playoff national championship in 2014, is speaking out on social media.

The national title-winning Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback is calling the NCAA a “joke” for the punishment. He doesn’t think it’s enough.

“So a slap on the wrist for cheating at its highest level. What Michigan did is a slight step below on players using PEDs. No place for cheating in any level of sports, what a joke,” he wrote.

Michigan’s national title will forever have an asterisk, though

While many aren’t happy with the lack of severe punishment, Michigan has already essentially been hit with a greater punishment in the court of public opinion.

Many college football fans will always look at Michigan’s 2023 national championship season as one with an asterisk. Even though the Wolverines were not believed to have stolen opponent signs illegally during that title run, many fans will constantly associate that with them.

It’s similar to the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. While many MLB fans were hoping for a greater punishment, the players involved in the scandal are, in a way, forever looked at differently.

The same is true of Michigan football in 2025.
