Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about Theo Wease, Jr.

The recent Mizzou grad had a disappointing NFL Draft after two strong years in black-and-gold, but that’s not stopping him from making a case for a full-time gig in the League. Wease signed with the Miami Dolphins as a UDFA (undrafted free agent) after the draft. And after one week in preseason, it appeared that Wease might be headed out the door just as quickly as he entered it.

But then Week Two happened!

Former Texas QB and seventh round pick Quinn Ewers twice connected with Wease for scores in the first half of Miami’s 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Wease was the Dolphins best performing receiver by a wide margin, tying for the team lead in catches while putting up 80 yards receiving and two scores, both to lead Miami.

The Dolphins are pretty deep at WR these days, especially after signing former Titan Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, whom sits two spots above Wease on the depth chart. But TWJ is still angling for a coveted roster spot, or maybe even a practice squad gig, which Mizzou players in the recent past have thrived with. Tyler Badie started as a PS member and worked his way into a regular role in Denver, where he still is today.

We’ll keep an eye on Wease as the NFL season nears. Hopefully he’s playing on Sundays, be it in Miami or somewhere else.

When I talked with head coach Shannon Welker about this, he said, “We felt that vault was an area we had an opportunity to improve earlier in the season. Mind you, we were the 11th team in the country on this event but still felt like this was a growth opportunity.”

As with any Karen piece, it’s incredibly thorough and you will learn… a lot!
