PHILADELPHIA — In the most-watched position battle of Eagles training camp, Kelee Ringo was the odd man out at NovaCare Complex on Monday.
Ringo, who is competing with Adoree’ Jackson and Jakorian Bennett for CB2 (the second outside cornerback spot), opposite Quinyon Mitchell, got zero first-team reps.
“I think all the guys are pretty even right now, and Jakorian just got here, got a full week last week,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “Need to give him a full opportunity with the other guys
Ringo, 23, had one tackle in Saturday’s preseason loss to Cleveland. The previous week against Cincinnati, he struggled against star receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Ringo ended up with three tackles, including one solo, in that game.
Bennett saw only limited action against the Browns, but he’s still working to familiarize himself with Fangio’s system after the Eagles acquired him from the Las Vegas Raiders two weeks ago. But Fangio likes his progress.
“I think it’s been good,” Fangio said. “We purposely didn’t (play him much). We could have played him in the first preseason game off of being here. Just what it was, two games, two days or three days max, but didn’t want to put him out there not knowing totally what to do. He’ll get another good amount of reps this week.”
Rookie corner Mac McWilliams, who missed some time with a quad injury, is also in the mix. In college at UAB and Central Florida, he played both outside and over the slot. As a senior he had 32 tackles, including 25 solo and 6.5 for loss, an interception and a sack.
On Monday, he got reps on the outside.
“Just me being a versatile guy, I feel like me moving outside … they feel like I need to be there at the moment,” McWilliams said. “So I’m just taking everything in, getting my reps, and just making sure I’m focusing on the criteria of being a DB.
McWilliams has explosive, 4.41 speed, but he has been playing catch-up a little bit in camp.
“Mac had that injury, which held him out of practice … and I think it’s affected him,” Fangio said. “But hopefully he’ll feel more healthy this week and we can see the true version of him. I think there’s more there than what we’re seeing and getting right now, and I think it’s probably more injury related and missing time related.”
Nickel corner Cooper DeJean, who has been taking reps at free safety this summer, got some reps at outside corner Monday. Fangio had mentioned it as a possibility when camp began last month, yet it seems likely he’ll to stay mostly at nickel and safety when the season begins.
What would it take for DeJean to see regular time at CB2?
“Someone to develop at the nickel position (behind him) and someone not to develop at the corner position,” Fangio said. “And we haven’t seen Cooper play any corner either, other than NCAA ball, so there’s a lot of unknowns there to be answered yet.”

Despite rookie safety Andrew Mukuba’s splashy debut against the Browns, in which he had a 75-yard pick six, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup, he hasn’t secured the free safety spot over Sydney Brown, Tristin McCollum and Andre’ Sam. He did help his cause though.
“The interception was obviously a good play,” Fangio said. “Not a great play on their part, but that’s not our problem. It’s when you have an opportunity to make a play, you got to make it, got to catch it and got to run with it. So that was a good play. The fumble recovery obviously was, again, a botch on their part, but some guys have a knack to make you pay for those botches and it’s our ball instead of second and 11.”

The Eagles like what they’ve seen this summer from rookie defensive tackle Ty Robinson, whom they drafted in the fourth round out of Nebraska. He’s been dynamic in practices and a quick study off the field. He has consistently helped generate pressure in both preseason games, and recorded a sack against the Bengals.
Robinson, at 6-foot-6, 310 pounds, started 47 games with the Huskers and was a team leader. Last year, he had 37 tackles, including 12.5 for loss, seven sacks, 25 pressures, and batted down seven passes. He anchored a defense that finished eighth in the nation against the run and 17th in scoring.

Merrill Reese, the legendary radio voice of the Eagles for 48 years, who will turn 83 just before the NFL season kicks off, signed a multi-year contract extension, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal. Details were not publicized.
Reese, who happens to be one of the nicest humans on the planet, grew up in Overbrook Park and graduated from Temple University before joining the Navy in the early 1960s. He took over play-by-play duties at WIP on Dec. 7, 1977, taking over for Charlie Swift.
Reese, still a staple around the facility on most days, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year. Former Eagles receiver Mike Quick has been his broadcast partner since 1998, preceded by Stan Walters, Bill Bergey and Herb Adderley.
