The San Francisco 49ers may be adding another quarterback through semi-unusual means.
QB Nate Sudfeld was on hand to throw in a workout that featured a trio of wide receivers according to Aaron Wilson from KPRC2 in Houston. The three WRs who worked out were Colton Dowell, Jalen Guyton and J.J. Jones.

San Francisco is still searching for some WR depth to finish off their preseason slate. They only had eight players to play WR in Week 2 of the preseason, and that included Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson who both figure to be at or near the top of the depth chart once the regular season begins. Any WR who signs in mid-to-late August isn’t liable to be a factor in the 53-man roster, and they’d more likely be around to potentially chew up some snaps in a preseason setting.
Sudfeld is the more intriguing name from Monday’s workout. He was supposed to be the backup QB for San Francisco in 2022 behind Trey Lance, but then Jimmy Garoppolo stayed with the team in a surprise development and Brock Purdy outplayed Sudfeld in training camp to steal the third roster spot under center.
If his workout went well and the 49ers coaching staff liked what they saw, there’s a chance he could sign via WR workout the same way current QB3 Carter Bradley did. Bradley has struggled in two preseason contests, however, opening the door for a potential change at the back of the QB depth chart.
Given his prior knowledge of the offense, Sudfeld could conceivably step in on short notice and help the 49ers get through their preseason finale Saturday at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. He could also provide some more in-house stability behind Purdy and Mac Jones. Sudfeld wouldn’t likely make the 53-man roster, but he may be a player San Francisco is more comfortable with as an emergency QB on game days.
