Jaguars’ Travis Hunter will reportedly start out at wide receiver before having cornerback duties added to his workload later on.
Jaguars 2-way rookie star Travis Hunter will walk at his graduation in Colorado Thursday then start Jaguars rookie minicamp on Friday as the “culture changer” they hunted for.

With rookie minicamp taking place this weekend for the Jacksonville Jaguars and then voluntary offseason programs continuing after that, the plan with Travis Hunter is that we are going to see a lot of him at wide receiver early on.
“They won’t do a lot of install but you’ll see a lot of Travis Hunter on the field,” said NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe of Hunter. “And one thing that was reiterated to me this week is that Travis Hunter will start off as a wide receiver first.
“He’s going to get most of his time at wide receiver, then learn defensive back as the summer goes along. It was expressed to me as he’ll major in offense and minor in defense but eventually they want him to be a double major on both offense and defense like he did at Colorado.”
This info, of course, doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Following the selection of Hunter in the NFL draft, James Gladstone and Liam Coen highlighted their plan for Hunter, which included onboarding him at the receiver position initially before expanding his responsibilities on defense.
However, while the Jaguars have a plan and schedule in place for Hunter, as Coen noted, throughout all of this, the team will have to remain “fluid” and adapt as necessary.
Hunter was considered by many to be both the top wide receiver and cornerback prospect in this year’s NFL draft. As a receiver during his 2024 Heisman season, Hunter recorded over 1,200 yards and had 15 touchdowns. On defense, he held quarterbacks to a completion rate of just 56% with four interceptions and seven pass breakups.
This is uncharted waters when it comes to Hunter’s potential usage, but how I could see things playing out is that the majority of Hunter’s snaps come on offense, while defensively, he sees the field during obvious passing situations, where his ball skills and natural coverage abilities can be on display.
One other note that Wolfe mentioned was coming out of the NFL combine, where the Jaguars had their lone meeting with Hunter, they viewed him as a “culture builder” both on and off the field. And before arriving in Jacksonville for rookie minicamp on Friday, Hunter will be walking across the stage on Thursday for his graduation at Colorado.
