The 49ers on Monday had tryouts with three wide receivers.
But the most notable name on the field was the quarterback who came to Santa Clara to throw the passes.
There was no immediate word if the 49ers would sign any of the players who were paced through the workout.
Nate Sudfeld, whom Brock Purdy beat out to be the 49ers’ No. 3 quarterback to open the 2021 NFL season, took part in the workout with the wide receivers.
Sudfeld, 31, is a four-year NFL veteran, who last appeared in two games with the Detroit Lions in 2022. Sudfeld was among the 49ers’ final cuts before the start of the 2021 season.
The 49ers went with Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo and Purdy to open that season.
Sudfeld sustained a season-ending knee injury with the Lions in a preseason game in 2023. Sudfeld was among the Lions’ final cuts a year ago as the Lions kept Jared Goff and Hendon Hooker as their two quarterbacks.
Colton Dowell, Jalen Guyton and J.J. Jones were the three wide receivers who tried out for a spot on the 49ers, as the team is looking for more depth to get through the final preseason game.
The 49ers finish the preseason against Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday at Levi’s Stadium.
Guyton appeared in 46 games with 14 starts for the Chargers from 2019 to 2023. He caught 71 passes for 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns. He spent part of last season on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.
Dowell appeared in 10 games with the Tennessee Titans in 2023. He caught one pass for 3 yards while seeing significant playing time on special teams.
Jones is an undrafted rookie from North Carolina, where he caught 36 passes for 582 yards and six touchdowns last year as a senior. He was in camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars and was waived two weeks ago.
