As the Chiefs are still reeling from February’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, many starters sat on Friday, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew threw for 70 yards on 7-of-9 passing and a one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Robert Tonyan.

Brashard Smith carried three times for 22 yards and Tonyan led all Chiefs with five catches for 41 yards, including the touchdown.

But against the Seattle starters, the Chiefs’ defense fizzled. New Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold saw preseason action for the first time and looked every bit the part of a franchise quarterback.

Darnold signed a three-year, $100.5 million deal with Seattle this offeseaon. The former Jet, Panther and Viking went 4 for 4 for 34 yards on the opening drive.

Darnold was able to use his running ability and find his tight ends to carve up the Kansas City defense.

“I thought today, first of all, it was awesome just to get out there in front of the 12s,” Darnold said. “And that atmosphere, too, I felt like that was kind of a perfect atmosphere. It felt like it was almost November, December already out there in the rain.”

Seattle backup Drew Lock was also impressive on Friday night with a pair of touchdown passes and a 10-of-12 performance for 129 yards.
