When the Washington Commanders‘ defense was on the field for Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, a prominent player was missing. While veterans Bobby Wagner and Von Miller had scheduled days off, rookie cornerback Trey Amos was expected to be in the starting lineup.

He wasn’t, which led to some concern. Was the Commanders’ second-round pick recently injured, and the team was keeping it quiet for the time being?

As it turns out, the answer is both yes and no. Amos was dealing with an injury, but it was nothing serious.

Head coach Dan Quinn said in his postgame press conference that Amos had experienced tightness in his hamstring after Saturday’s practice. Quinn said they worked Amos out on the field, and while the rookie said he was good to go, he was still feeling some discomfort, and the team chose to play it safe.

It’s a short week for the Commanders, so that’s probably the last we’ll see of Amos until the Commanders host the Giants in Week 1. Washington plays Baltimore in the final preseason game on Saturday, and most, if not all, of the team’s starters are unlikely to play.

It’s been a terrific summer for Amos, and he’s likely earned the third starting cornerback job, alongside Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil.
