ASHBURN, Va. (7News) — Commanders’ training camp has come to an end. Since mid-July, players have been working hard to prove they are worthy of one of the team’s 53 roster spots, and as cut-down day looms, they will soon know their fate.

7News caught up with players following Thursday’s final practice. Many players spoke on the foundation that has been built and the bond that has formed between teammates.

“It’s fun every time we touch the grass,” safety Will Harris told 7News Sports’ Natalie Spala. “The relationship that we have off the field, you can see that it visibly carries over to the field.”

“Guys are just really bought in,” safety Quan Martin said. “Some days I don’t want to leave the practice field, because I know there’s opportunities out there and ways to get better.”

This year, teams must have their rosters finalized on Tuesday, August 26, at 4 p.m.

For many of the Commanders’ bubble players, Saturday’s preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens will be their final opportunity to convince the coaching staff they deserve to don the burgundy and gold this season.

“Just showing up how I work every day: staying consistent and being who I am, and like I said, stopping the run and getting after the QB,” defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes said.

Veterans like tight end Zach Ertz are offering words of wisdom to those players who are at risk of getting cut.

“Go out there and play free, don’t worry about what’s coming. Everyone understands the business of this league, but if you focus on that then you’re not present in the moment,” Ertz said. “Go out there and play your hearts out, I think that’s the message for everyone.”

A fresh face to join the team on the field on Thursday was quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Washington backup has been working through Achilles tendinitis that has kept him sidelined for weeks.

“Felt great. I’m not going to lie to you, rehab sucks,” Mariota said. “To be able to be out here with the guys and just to throw around is what I’m here for, it’s what I love to do, and it was nice to be back out there.”

The Commanders and Ravens square off at Northwest Stadium on Saturday at noon. You can catch the game on ABC 7.
