Becoming the head coach of the Chicago Bears is going to come with plenty of challenges for Ben Johnson, and not all of them will be directly related to success on the field. With Johnson coming into his first year, not only will he be tasked with bringing winning football back to the organization, but he’s also going to have to get accustomed to the passionate Bears fanbase.

That fanbase showed their true colors in the team’s Week 2 preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills, a 38-0 shutout pitched by Chicago. Even in a blowout, fans at Soldier Field were booing Johnson after he opted to take a knee rather than attempt to score another touchdown to break the 40-point mark.

Receiving flack for not riding up the scoreboard, Johnson made it a point of emphasis in his interview with Kay Adams of “Up & Adams” that he will always focus on the task at hand until the game is complete.

“When we’re between the white lines, there’s a certain way we’re going about our business and that’s just it,” Johnson said.

Asked about his decision to take a knee rather than try to add to their lopsided score against Buffalo, the first-year head coach received his welcome to Chicago moment.

“I looked up and you get lost at times with where we’re at in the game,” he said. “So we were going, going, going, and then it was time to take the knee. Although, the fans behind me let me know it was not a good decision. There were a lot of boos. Welcome to Chicago.”
