The Devaughn Vele trade between the Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints may tell us that the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to add to the wide receiver position.

The Broncos recently traded wide receiver Devaughn Vele to the Saints in return for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick.

When Broncos head coach Sean Payton was discussing the move, he mentioned that there were three teams that made calls about Vele, two of which he considered serious.

Payton then name-dropped the Jaguars.

“Well, that factors in,” Payton said of trading Vele to the Saints, a team he obviously knows well. “And Jacksonville… you know, ultimately, it’s the best compensation. And when it became a four and a seven, that was certainly something that — I think George [Paton] and I both knew if it became a four, that’s something we would do.”

Vele is now with the Saints, but this tells us that GM James Gladstone seems to be interested in adding to the Jacksonville receiver room.

We know that Brian Thomas Jr., Dyami Brown, Travis Hunter, and Parker Washington are at the top of the depth chart, but the fifth and potential sixth spots–if Jacksonville rosters that many–on the 53-man roster are up for grabs.

Trenton Irwin seems to have a firm grasp on that fifth wide receiver role. He’s experienced, has been productive this summer, and can help on teams. Although that doesn’t mean Gladstone still isn’t searching for a possible upgrade.

With that said, that potential sixth opening doesn’t seem to have a clear frontrunner, especially after the team waived Josh Cephus with an injury designation.

When it comes to playing receiver in the Liam Coen offense, he prefers big-bodied pass catchers who are willing blockers, can be sent in motion, and line up inside and out.

Whether the Jaguars make a trade remains to be seen, but when roster cutdowns take place, keep your eyes on waivers, as Gladstone could put in a claim on a released wideout.
