As the San Francisco 49ers close out the 2025 preseason on Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers in Santa Clara, they’ll be without backup quarterback Mac Jones.
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said in Tuesday’s presser that Jones suffered a sprained knee last week in the 22-19 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

He’ll be out of commission this weekend.
Jones signed a two-year, $8.41 million deal with the 49ers this offseason to back up Brock Purdy. That includes $4.75 million in guarantees.
Shanahan noted he’s been high on Jones for a while.
“Mac’s doing a good job,” said Shanahan. “We’ve really liked what we’ve seen from him so far. We had an idea of what we hoped he’d be like, and he’s been exactly that. He’s been playing really well and hopefully he’ll continue that.”

San Francisco signed Nate Sudfeld on Tuesday, with Jones out for the week. Sudfeld joins Purdy, Kurtis Rourke and Carter Bradley under center for the 49ers.
Jones was selected with the No. 15 overall pick in 2021 by the New England Patriots to replace the recently retired Tom Brady. Jones never caught on across three seasons before joining the Jaguars for one year, before arriving in San Francisco.
Across 52 career games with 49 starts, Jones has thrown for 10,590 yards with 54 touchdowns and 44 interceptions while completing 65.9 percent of his passes.
