ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) – Athens is gearing up for a weekend full of fun, football, and giving back!
The traditional Athens High Pep Rally kicked off on Friday afternoon in downtown Athens.
Students, band members, cheerleaders, and fans took over the square for the first home football game of the season.
“We have a pep rally on the square every year before the first home football game, and you feel the energy already from all the players, but this is absolutely wonderful,” Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said.
“This is what makes our hometown, as we say, the southern classic character that we are, and you can feel the energy is the best city in the state of Alabama. I’ll say that to all the mayors out there that you don’t get any better than this right here.”
On Saturday, the annual Summerfest Concert returns.
Proceeds will benefit the Athens Fire and Rescue Auxiliary’s Shop with a Firefighter program.
Last year, the program gifted 80 local children with necessities and toys for Christmas.
