HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER

Lewiston 9, Columbia 1

The Bengals started their season on the right foot and christened their new home field at the P1FCU Athletic Complex with a blitz over nonleague foe Columbia of Nampa.

The duo of Avery Lathen and Brynn Wimer combined for three scoring plays, with Wimer assisting Lathen on the opening goal of the contest in the 11th minute before Lathen returned the favor for Wimer’s two conversions. Lathen, who also spent time goalkeeping and registered one save, would go on to bookend Bengal scoring with a goal in the 75th minute off a Kate Antonich assist.

“It was just a great team effort, and our defense really stood out, not allowing any shooting opportunities, really,” Lewiston coach Scott Wimer said. “Columbia has some really good speed and some talented players, but our defense did a fantastic job of shutting them down and not letting them take very many shots.”
