There is now a 15 day wait until the New Orleans Saints begin their regular season at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Second-year wide receiver Mason Tipton wears No. 15 for New Orleans. After wearing No. 84 as an undrafted rookie last year, Tipton switched numbers and is hoping for an even bigger role in the team’s offense. He is also our Saints Player of the Day, so here’s a closer look at his career to date.
Name (age): Mason Tipton (24)
Height, weight: 5-foot-11, 180 pounds
Relative Athletic Score: 8.03
Drafted: Undrafted in 2024 (Saints)
2025 salary cap hit: $963,333
A three-time state champion at Archbishop Hogan High School in Akron, Tipton chose an offer to Yale over nearby Kent State. As a true freshman in 2019, he’d catch 24 balls for 325 yards and 4 touchdowns. After Yale canceled their 2020 season because of Covid, Tipton came back the following year to have 27 receptions for 570 yards, an impressive 21.1 per catch. After a 2022 campaign where his statistical production dipped, Tipton came back in 2023 to have his best season for the Bulldogs. As a senior, Tipton had 52 receptions for 786 yards and 10 touchdowns to earn First Team All-Ivy League honors. He left Yale third in program history for career receiving touchdowns, fifth in catches, and sixth in receiving yardage.

Despite the college production, Tipton was not selected in the 2024 NFL draft. He’d sign with the Saints in spite of the fact that he was selected in the UFL draft by the Memphis Showboats. A strong training camp and preseason showing allowed Tipton to make the New Orleans roster as a rookie. When injuries ravaged the Saints wideout corps, Tipton was pressed into more reps. He’d wind up appearing in 11 games and 51% of the offensive snaps. As a rookie, Tipton had 14 receptions out of 26 targets for 99 yards and no scores.
Now in his second season, Tipton is competing to potentially be the Saints’ third wideout behind starters Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. He’s had an impressive camp and has backed that up with a 54-yard scoring reception against the Chargers in the first preseason game and 6 catches for 100 yards against the Jaguars last week. For a New Orleans team with a concerning lack of depth at receiver, a breakout year from Mason Tipton could be a key to some successful offensive performances.
