The Washington Commanders finished the preseason with a 30-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday at Northwest Stadium. Washington ends the preseason with a 0-3 record.
Quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson combined to turn the ball over four times in the game, leading directly to 17 points for the Ravens. Washington’s best offensive play came courtesy of second-year tight end Colson Yankoff, who caught a short pass and rumbled 52 yards into Baltimore territory.
Some young defenders impressed, such as safety Ben Nikkel and linebacker Ale Kaho, who combined to make 15 tackles, including two for loss.
Next up for the Commanders is an NFC East battle in Week 1, when the New York Giants come to Landover.
Jayden Daniels and Lamar Jackson postgame
A very unimpressive showing to cap off a winless preseason.
This time, Josh Johnson is picked off in the end zone.
Kaho has six tackles and is consistently around the football. A good final impression for him.
Josh Johnson is in at quarterback.
Sam Hartman completed 12 of 17 passes for 114 yards, but was intercepted twice and fumbled once. One of those interceptions was returned for a touchdown. The first pick wasn’t his fault. The fumble just before halftime saw right tackle Trent Scott miss his block, leading Hartman to hurry from the pocket. Rough summer for Hartman, despite some encouraging signs today.
Tyler Loop drills a 52-yarder before halftime to extend Baltimore’s lead to 27-3.
Sam Hartman with a bad decision. The throw was late and had no zip. Ravens DB Keyon Martin picks it off and returns it 26 yards for a touchdown.
Matt Gay is good from 47 yards out to get the Commanders on the board.
Second-year tight end Colson Yankoff takes the catch and goes 52 yards into Baltimore territory.
Ravens turn interception into three points, extending their lead.
Hartman attempted a slant, and the Ravens got a hand on the pass, deflected it, and Baltimore’s Jalyn Armour-Davis picked it off.
The Ravens turn Matt Gay’s missed kick into a seven-play, 57-yard drive, finished off with a short touchdown run from D’Ernest Johnson.
Baltimore had its way with Washington’s run defense, while mistakes plagued the Commanders’ offense and special teams.
Washington’s drive ends as kicker Matt Gay pulls a field-goal attempt wide left. Not a great preseason for him.
Interestingly, left guard Brandon Coleman starts this game for Washington. This is more about getting Coleman some work after he missed three weeks of practice.
Another big opportunity for Hartman, who has struggled this summer.
The Ravens open up with a dominant 14-play, 70-yard drive that ends with a touchdown run from Rasheen Ali. Baltimore ran it 12 times, passed it twice for nine yards. Drive last well over eight minutes.
Baltimore will begin the game at its own 30-yard line. Cooper Rush to start at QB.
Commanders to keep an eye on today (with 33 starters and key reserves not participating):
RB Chris Rodriguez
WR Luke McCaffrey
TE Ben Sinnott
LB Jordan Magee
DE Jacob Martin
DT Carl Davis
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) August 23, 2025
Sinnott and Magee are certainly players to watch. Sinnott, a second-round pick last year, has been quiet in the preseason, while Magee, a 2024 fifth-rounder, can’t stay healthy.
This is an encouraging sight ahead of Week 1.
Another McLaurin sighting.
Chris Rodriguez will play, but rookie seventh-round pick Bill Croskey-Merritt will not. It’s still safe to assume that Rodriguez is on the roster. Also, rookie second-round pick Trey Amos is active. He missed Monday’s game, and this is probably more about getting some extra work in. Wide receiver Luke McCaffrey will play, but rookie WR Jaylin Lane will not. While I don’t believe he’s in danger of being cut, Luke needs a solid day.
A big deal was made out of McLaurin not being at Monday’s game.
33 in total.
