SANTA CLARA — Terique Owens received a text from his dad on Saturday, but he was preoccupied.

He was getting ready for the 49ers’ final preseason game, so he was locked in, he said. He did not have an opportunity to soak in the video of his dad, Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, scoring his first NFL touchdown.

Terique Owens, 25, provided his own highlight when he scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Carter Bradley in the 49ers’ 30-23 preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

“It’ll be a crazy feeling to call him and talk about it,” the younger Owens said after the game.

So did Terrell Owens have his popcorn ready and predict his son would score his first preseason touchdown on Saturday at Levi’s Stadium?

“He didn’t call it, but he was just like, ‘I’m ready for yours,’” Terique Owens said.

“It’s kind of crazy I got mine tonight. I never would’ve expected it would be tonight, but I was ready for the opportunity.”

It was an opportunity that seemed far-fetched not too long ago.

Terique Owens did not begin playing football until his sophomore year at Bishop O’Dowd High in Oakland.

He attended Contra Costa College, Florida Atlantic and finished at Missouri State. As a senior, he caught 28 passes for 528 yards.

On Saturday, he held the football from his touchdown as a memento at his locker.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling when I think about my path to get here,” Owens said. “I started playing football late and had a long journey just to get here and get these opportunities, and I made the most of it. It’s an unbelievable feeling.”

Owens remains a long shot to win a spot on the 49ers’ 53-man roster. But he made a solid case to get an invitation to remain on the team’s practice squad, as he did last year as a rookie.

All NFL teams must trim their 90-man rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 by Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Owens said his approach throughout training camp was to stay quiet, keep his head down, remain diligent and keep working hard.

“I’m going into it knowing that I gave everything I got,” he said. “I feel like I put my best foot forward and I’m ready for whatever decisions are made.”

Owens caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown during the preseason.
