In the days before final roster cuts, teams are not only figuring out ways to trim their rosters, but also explore trade possibilities. Several deals have come together already and ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has one idea for the Los Angeles Rams.

In a column on Monday, Barnwell proposed a deal where the Rams trade Derion Kendrick and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Chicago Bears for left tackle Braxton Jones. Kendrick seems unlikely to make the Rams’ 53-man roster so getting anything in return for him, even at the cost of a sixth-round pick, would benefit Los Angeles.

On the flip side, the Rams are encouraged by the progress Alaric Jackson has made in his recovery from blood clots, remaining hopeful he can play in Week 1. If he can’t, they do already have D.J. Humphries, and potentially David Quessenberry and Warren McClendon Jr. as backup options, too.

Here’s part of what Barnwell wrote about his proposed deal.

While the Rams signed D.J. Humphries as a veteran option, the Chiefs weren’t impressed with what they saw from him down the stretch last season, preferring Joe Thuney all the way through the Super Bowl. Jones would be one of the few young left tackles with significant experience available for a potential trade before the season. And while the Bears are typically focused on adding talent in free agency, the Rams are more conscious of the compensatory pick formula. With Dan Moore and Jaylon Moore earning surprisingly large deals in free agency, Jones might follow in their footsteps if he were to perform well in L.A.

It’s an extremely low-risk deal for the Rams, especially considering Kendrick is likely to be cut anyway. A sixth-round pick isn’t much to give up for a former starting left tackle, someone who’s still competing for the starting role in Chicago this summer.

Jones played and started 40 games for the Bears in the last three years after being a fifth-round pick in 2022. Though the new coaching regime doesn’t seem to love Jones’ prospects as Caleb Williams’ blindside protector, the Rams could buy-low and pick up some insurance for cheap.
