How does Jowon Briggs know that Aaron Glenn is the right man for the job?

According to the New York Jets’ newest defensive tackle, it’s because he brought Briggs to New York.

In his first interview with the New York media, Briggs spoke about his first impressions of head coach Aaron Glenn.

“He’s a great dude. Obviously, my first time meeting him was pretty much three days ago. But from everything I’ve heard about him, everything I’ve learned from talking to him, he’s a great guy, very personable,” Briggs said. “And he understands what he’s doing, because I’m here.”

For young NFL players, mentorship can be just as critical as talent. The Jets’ 24-year-old defensive tackle will have a chance to learn from All-Pro Quinnen Williams, an opportunity he is “thankful” for.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Briggs praised Williams’ success and emphasized his eagerness to absorb as much as he can from the Alabama product.

“It’s awesome, he is obviously a baller, it’s definitely awesome to get here and learn from another veteran that actually has a lot to give, so I am nothing but thankful for the opportunity,” said Briggs.

Briggs entered the league as a seventh-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2024. After beginning his rookie year on the practice squad, he played six games late in the season, recording 13 tackles with a fumble recovery. He graded out solidly as a run defender, earning a 66.5 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus.

Briggs played five seasons of college football at Virginia and Cincinnati, finishing his collegiate career with 170 tackles and 12 sacks.

The Jets acquired Briggs from the Browns on Wednesday in a late-round pick swap, sending a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2026 seventh-rounder.

Briggs will have the chance to learn not only from Williams but also from veteran Harrison Phillips, who was acquired by the Jets in a trade last week with the Minnesota Vikings, hours after they traded for Briggs.

In New York’s wide-open defensive tackle room, Briggs will have a chance to build on his limited yet promising rookie season, as well as a standout 2025 preseason. Surrounded by veterans like Williams and Phillips should only accelerate his development.
