The Eagles are waiving sixth-round quarterback Kyle McCord, who had an up-and-down training camp and preseason.
The Eagles are waiving sixth-round quarterback Kyle McCord, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia on Monday.
This move doesn’t come as much of a surprise after the Eagles on Sunday pulled off a trade to acquire Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings. They will go into this season with Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee and Howell in their quarterback room. McKee is dealing with a thumb injury and his status for Week 1 is up in the air.
The news of McCord’s release was first reported by NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
The deadline for the Eagles to trim their roster to 53 players is 4 p.m. on Tuesday. They are well into that process.
McCord, 22, was selected in the sixth round (No. 181 overall) out of Syracuse this spring. McCord previously played at Ohio State and is a South Jersey native who went to St. Joseph’s Prep.
While McCord did some good things in training camp and even moved ahead of veteran Dorian Thompson-Robinson (who was already waived) in the pecking order, he struggled in the preseason. McCord completed just 24 of 56 passing attempts (42.9%) for 191 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. His passer rating was 43.1.
The Eagles started McCord in the third preseason game against the Jets and let him play the entire game. Two days later, they traded for Howell.
Against the Jets, McCord was 15-for-30 for 136 yards. He threw an interception deep into double coverage in the first quarter.
If McCord clears waivers, he will be a free agent and able to sign anywhere. Even though he didn’t make the Eagles’ 53-man roster, they might be able to get him back to their practice squad and continue to develop him.
