Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach Liam Coen saying the “DUUUVAL” chant during his introductory press conference made its rounds on social media, with many poking fun at how Coen said it.

“Obviously everybody in the world was busting my chops about the (introductory) press conference,” Coen told The Athletic’s Mike Jones in a recent interview. “Totally acceptable and understandable.”

However, as Coen also recalled, there were also two current head coaches who reached out to offer support and advice.

The first was the Philadelphia Eagles’ Nick Sirianni, who spoke to Coen at the NFL Owners’ Meetings

“What was cool was Nick Sirianni grabbed me at the owners meetings—never met him before—and was like, ‘Dude, use that,” Coen told Mike Jones via Bleacher Report. “Use it as fuel. Your players will rally. They get scrutinized all the time in the media. And so when their coach does own that. Use it. Take it and ultimately, just be yourself.'”

The other coach who reached out to Coen was Detroit’s Dan Campbell, who made headlines of his own when he took over as the Lions’ head coach and discussed biting kneecaps.

“Dan Campbell said the same thing,” Coen said. “Remember he talked about knee caps getting bitten off at his press conference and people were killing him about it. He was like, ‘Man, just use it as fuel.'”

In the matter of two seasons, Campbell took the Lions from a 3-13 record in his first year as head coach to 12 wins in 2023. Detroit then won 15 games in 2024.

Sirianni has four winning seasons in his four years as head coach of the Eagles, three of which hit the double-digit mark. He’s also been to two Super Bowls, winning the most recent one.

As we know, an introductory press conference won’t determine a head coach’s success.
