One of the bigger quarterback names to come out of college football is reportedly looking for work after Monday’s news.
With a number of training camp battles coming to an end this week, the Philadelphia Eagles reportedly decided to let go of one of their QBs as they begin their Super Bowl defense.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, “The #Eagles are releasing rookie QB Kyle McCord, per a league source.” Adding, “The 6th-round pick out of Syracuse had a good training camp, but Philly already has 3 QBs on its roster.”
In his handful of preseason appearances, McCord completed 24 of his 46 pass attempts for 191 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions — two of which resulted in wins for Nick Sirianni’s team.

McCord’s college career
McCord was selected with the 181st overall pick this April after a standout college career that included stops at Ohio State and Syracuse.

McCord arrived in Columbus as a four-star recruit out of St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia where he backed up C.J. Stroud for two years before getting his shot to lead the offense in 2023.
In that lone season as a starter for the Buckeyes, Kyle threw for 3,170 yards with a 24:6 touchdown to interception ratio. However, many felt the junior was holding OSU back from being a true national title contender given the weapons they had on offense.
McCord ended up transferring to Upstate New York where he really took things up a notch for Fran Brown and Co. — leading the nation in passing with 4,779 yards on the way to Syracuse’s first 10-win season since 2018.

He also finished top five is passing touchdowns and capped off his college career with an incredible performance in the Holiday Bowl.
What’s next for the QB?
If McCord ends up clearing waivers, he’ll be a free agent with the ability to sign anywhere. And even though he didn’t make the Eagles’ final 53, there’s still the chance that they bring him back on the practice squad and continue to develop him.
There’s definitely some tools to work with McCord who has solid size (6-foot-3, 218 lbs) and enough arm talent to make NFL-caliber throws. In the right situation he could definitely be a capable backup with the ability to maybe even be a starter somewhere down the line.

With Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee and Sam Howell already taking up the top three spots on the depth chart though, it was always going to be hard for McCord to crack the active roster.
The Eagles open the season next Thursday night vs. Dallas for a special edition of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC and Peacock.
