According to NFL reporter Ari Meirov, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to release young wide receiver Trey Palmer. Palmer has been solid during his short career, given his limited opportunities, but with a crowded wide receiver room, Palmer is the odd man out.
This should be of particular interest to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Back in May, Steelers radio host Zachary Smith reported that the Steelers were investigating a possible trade for Palmer but nothing ever came of that. Now, if Palmer is available, the Steelers might make him an offer to see if he’d want to compete for a spot on the depth chart.

There have been plenty of changes to the wide receiver situation with the Steelers since May. Obviously, the team traded away George Pickens, leaving a spot for a new No. 2. Veteran Robert Woods hasn’t been impressive and is on the roster bubble, leaving Scotty Miller, Calvin Austin III, and Roman Wilson to sort out the rest behind DK Metcalf. The question for the Steelers, should they pursue Palmer, would be if he brings anything to the table that those three don’t. A case could be made that Palmer doesn’t add value to the depth chart at this time.
The Steelers must have their roster timmed to 53 by the end of business on Tuesday and then can turn their attention to prearing for the regular season debut against the New York Jets.
