Offensive lineman Asim Richards was traded on Tuesday from Dallas to the New Orleans Saints ahead of the NFL’s roster cutdown deadline.
Richards was acquired for future considerations. The fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina had played in 21 games for the Cowboys the last two seasons with one start. He did not appear to have a pathway to regular time with Dallas this year, despite a plethora of injuries on the offensive front.
Richards, 24, stands 6-4 and 307 pounds. He has played primarily as an offensive tackle, though he’s also filled gaps on the inside of the line. He will be in the mix to protect quarterback Spencer Rattler, whom new Saints coach Kellen Moore named the starter on Tuesday in the last quarterback battle in the league to be resolved.
Richards was an All-Delco at Haverford School, playing football and basketball. He graduated in 2019. He started 38 of his final 39 games at UNC, a third-team All-ACC honoree as a senior.
