FRISCO — Cowboys defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey thought he was going to get cut. He told his agent on Tuesday that the Cowboys were cutting him.

Winfrey’s confusion led many on the social media platform, X, to express outrage over his departure.

One problem: He wasn’t cut. The Cowboys are keeping Winfrey, one of four defensive tackles to make the 53-man roster.

Winfrey took being summoned to coach Brian Schottenheimer’s office for a meeting with team executive Will McClay as a sign the team was done with him.

Schottenheimer choked up while telling reporters about Winfrey’s hectic Tuesday.

“We brought Perrion Winfrey in and he assumed he was being cut,” Schottenheimer said. “So he walked in and sat down in my office and Will McClay and I were in there. I did play it up a little bit. I was a pretty good actor, if I do say so myself. Probably being kind of a jackass for doing it, but I said, ‘These are hard days and there are a lot of hard conversations that have to happen, but this is one I’ve really been looking forward to because I’m telling you that you’ve made the team.’ And he became very emotional. And then I became emotional. I looked over at McClay and he was emotional.”
