UConn football looking for strong start to season against Central Connecticut State

  • August 27, 2025

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – It’s now game week for the UConn football team.

Their season opener is Saturday against Central Connecticut State at Rentschler Field.

Head Coach Jim Mora’s coaching philosophy is all about staying in the moment.

Now in his 4th season at the helm of the Huskies, he doesn’t take a long view of the season and he doesn’t like to compare one team to another.

That leaves many wondering where the team is heading into Saturday’s opener.

“You get a bunch of new guys coming in, they don’t necessarily know how we operate here. We operate at a certain level, we do things a certain way, and they may not accept it right away but everyone has a done a really good job understanding how we work and pushing it to the next level,” said Quarterback Joe Fagnano.

He is in his 7th season and was named UConn’s starting quarterback.

He has familiarity with the offense and players like Skyler Bell, who have played in Mora’s system.

That experience will be helpful Saturday, but it doesn’t guarantee that the team is ready to go.

“In a game like this where you get a bunch of new guys coming in, you’re playing a team you haven’t seen before, you seeing things you haven’t scouted for, the most important thing you can can do, play with aggression and execute,” said Mora.

Mora evaluates progress one play at a time, one practice at a time, one game at a time.

After the game against the Blue Devils, he will have a better idea on how far the team has come and how far it has to go.
