The 2025 NFL Preseason didn’t feature as many marquee battles for starting quarterback jobs as in recent seasons (Drake Maye/Jacoby Brissett and Bo Nix/Jarrett Stidham last year), with just the vacant New Orleans Saints job up for grabs.
That gig ultimately went to 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler. The former South Carolina product edged 2025 second-round pick Tyler Shough for the starting job on a franchise poised to be in Arch Manning conversations next season. Another battle emerged during camp without much notice. The Indianapolis Colts surprised many by naming free agent signing Daniel Jones the starter over 2023 fourth-overall pick Anthony Richardson Sr.
The 2025 training camp battle with the most ink spilled over it wasn’t for a starting gig; instead, it was for the backup, third-string, and even fourth-string positions for the Cleveland Browns.

Cleveland entered the 2025 preseason with three players — Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel (2025 third-round pick), and Shedeur Sanders (2025 fifth) — vying for spots on the roster. The Browns’ picture was further complicated when a rash of injuries led the team to sign free agent Tyler Huntley.
Pickett was ultimately traded to the Las Vegas Raiders for a future fifth-round pick following an injury to their backup, Aidan O’Connell. Cleveland named Gabriel the backup and Sanders the third-stringer and released Huntley.
