The 49ers reportedly are a finalist to sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling after the Seattle Seahawks released the wide receiver Tuesday amid their roster cutdown.
Either San Francisco or the Pittsburgh Steelers are “next up” for the seven-year NFL veteran, KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson reported Tuesday night, citing a source.
Valdes-Scantling, 30, signed with the Seahawks on a one-year, $4 million contract in March, but was outperformed over the summer by Seattle’s rookie fifth-round pick Tory Horton, among others. The 49ers set their initial 53-man roster Tuesday with five total receivers, but only two — Ricky Pearsall and Skyy Moore — who are fully healthy.
Since being taken by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Valdes-Scantling has caught 205 passes for 3,566 yards and 20 touchdowns while helping the Kansas City Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls in 2022 and 2023.
The Buffalo Bills released Valdes-Scantling after six games in October 2024 after acquiring Amari Cooper — another 49ers target this offseason — in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. He went on to sign with the New Orleans Saints, where he caught 17 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns in eight games.
