The first thing you notice is just how young this team is.
Of the 53 players on the Eagles’ roster, only six are older than 28, including just three projected starters. And 30 of the 53 – that’s 57 percent are 25 or younger.
With the Eagles’ initial 53-man roster set – at least for now — let’s take a look at some of the trends and stats with the players they kept as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.
YOUNG ROSTER: As we said, this is a very young roster, with 35-year-old Lane Johnson and 30-year-old Dallas Goedert the only players 30 or over who are projected to start. Matt Pryor, Ogbo Okoronkwo and Jake Elliott are also 30 and Adoree’ Jackson is 29.
The defense is crazy young. Of the 24 defensive players on the 53 as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, only three were older than 26, and 14 were 24 or younger.
The only projected starters – and we’re guessing here on CB2 – who are over 26 are Jackson and 28-year-old Zack Baun, who is still young as a linebacker, in his second year at a new position.
The oldest projected starter on the defensive line is Jordan Davis, who doesn’t turn 26 until January, and other than Baun and possibly Jackson, the oldest projected defensive starters is Reed Blankenship, who is 26.
POSITION-BY-POSITION: As of now, the Eagles have three quarterbacks, three running backs, a fullback, five wide receivers, three tight ends, 11 offensive linemen, six defensive tackles, five edge rushers, four linebackers, six corners, four safeties and two specialists. That will change in the next 24 hours.
ROOKIE COUNT: Howie Roseman kept eight rookies, including seven draft picks: 1st-round pick Jihaad Campbell, 2nd-round pick Andrew Mukuba, 4th-rounder Ty Robinson, all three 5th-round picks – Mac McWilliams, Smael Mondon and Drew Kendall – and 6th-round selection Cameron Williams. Myles Hinton, another 6th-rounder, went on Injured Reserve. The only draft picks released were 6th-round quarterback Andrew McCord and 6th-round edge Antwuan Powell-Ryland. Rookie receiver Darius Cooper also made the team.
WHERE WERE THEY DRAFTED? Seven guys on the current roster were never drafted: Blankenship and safety Tristin McCollum, interior lineman Gabe Hall, offensive linemen Brett Toth and Fred Johnson, fullback Ben VanSumeren and Cooper. The roster also includes 10 one-time 1st-round picks (seven drafted by the Eagles) along with 11 2nd-round picks, five 3rd-rounders, five 4th-rounders, eight 5th-round selections, five 6th-rounders and two 7th-round picks. So 22 of the 53 players currently on the roster – more than 40 percent – were either drafted in the fifth round or later or were undrafted.
HOW MANY NEWBIES? There are 18 players who weren’t with the Eagles at all last year, either on the active roster or practice squad. That would be all eight rookies, plus A.J. Dillon, Kylen Granson, Adoree Jackson, Azeez Ojulari, Matt Pryor, Josh Uche, Ogbo Okoronkwo, Jakorian Bennett, John Metchie and Sam Howell. That means 34 percent of the current team wasn’t here for the Super Bowl.
HOWIE LOVES THE DRAFT:A total of 24 players on the roster (or injured lists) were originally Eagles draft picks: Lane Johnson in 2013, Dallas Goedert, Matt Pryor and Jordan Mailata in 2018, Jalen Hurts in 2020, DeVonta Smith and Landon Dickerson in 2021, Jordan Davis, Cam Jurgens, Nakobe Dean and Grant Calcaterra in 2022, Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Tyler Steen, Sydney Brown, Kelee Ringo, Tanner McKee and Moro Ojomo in 2023 and Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Jalyx Hunt, Will Shipley, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Johnny Wilson and Trevor Keegan from last year. That means 20 out of 26 picks over the last three drafts are on the current 53 and two others – Wilson and Myles Hinton – are on injured lists. The only players the Eagles have drafted since 2023 who aren’t with the team are Ainias Smith, Dylan McMahon, Kyle McCord and Antwuan Powell-Ryland.
WHO’S BEEN HERE THE LONGEST? There are only seven players on the roster who were here before the 2022 season – Lane Johnson, Jake Elliott, Dallas Goedert, Jordan Mailata, Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith and Landon Dickerson.
SUPER BOWL HOLDOVERS: Only seven of the Eagles’ 2024 opening-day starters in São Paulo are no longer on the roster – right guard Mekhi Becton on offense and edge rushers Josh Sweat and Bryce Huff, interior lineman Milton Williams, linebacker Oren Burks, cornerback Darius Slay and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on defense.
