The Las Vegas Raiders have been on a quest for stability in the quarterback position since their longtime starter, Derek Carr, moved to the New Orleans Saints after the 2023 season.

In an attempt to fill this void, they traded a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Geno Smith and also recently completed another significant quarterback trade for Kenny Pickett – a deal that impacts Shedeur Sanders.

During the draft, the Raiders picked Cam Miller in the sixth round following his impressive tenure at North Dakota State. According to GM John Spytek, Miller was highly favored by team minority owner Tom Brady.

Despite owning only a 5% stake in the team, Brady occasionally influences the team’s decision-making processes.

“He liked the way he threw it, his technique, throwing from the ground up, and his motion,” Spytek confessed to The Athletic after Miller was drafted. And he thought he had the potential to improve.”

However, 24 year old Miller won’t get a chance to prove himself: Las Vegas released him while trimming their roster down to 53 players, reports the Mirror US.

Miller had an impressive record of 45-11 as a starter and won two FCS Championships at North Dakota State, a school known for producing NFL players like Carson Wentz and Trey Lance.

In 2024, he bagged numerous honors including First-team FCS All-American, MVFC Offensive Player of the Year, and First-team All-MVFC.

After an injury sidelined incumbent backup Aiden O’Connell, the Raiders traded a fifth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for former first-round pick Kenny Pickett.

Even with O’Connell sidelined by injury, Miller’s position remained unnecessary. “A guy that’s had game experience is huge to me,” head coach Pete Carroll stated before Las Vegas brought in Pickett.

“Cam hasn’t played in the league much, so we’re looking for an experienced player that could help us.”

Smith and the remaining Raiders signal-callers will target a diverse group of pass-catchers. Leading receiver Jakobi Meyers was anticipated to top the depth chart but demanded a trade due to a recent contract disagreement.

Las Vegas brought back familiar face Amari Cooper this week. The organization selected him in the opening round of the 2015 NFL Draft while they remained in Vegas.

The Raiders dealt Cooper to the Cowboys during the 2018 campaign for a first-round selection. He’s since spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills.

2024 emerging star Tre Tucker and 2025 first-year players Dont’e Thornton Jr and Jack Bech complete the receiving corps. Much of the aerial attack will flow through phenomenal sophomore tight end Brock Bowers.
