Shaquill Griffin’s second go-round with the Seahawks is over.

For one day, at least.

That’s thanks to them taking from a division rival.

Seattle still needs to augment their wafer-thin spots at defensive tackle and linebacker. Their initial practice squad for the regular season does some of that.

Accent on initial.

The Seahawks claimed and signed off league waivers now-former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick. The 2022 sixth-round pick who won national championships at Georgia and Clemson was L.A.’S starting cornerback for six games as a rookie and then 12 games in 2023. His first career interception was for the Rams while beating Seattle that season.

The 6-foot, 199-pound Kendrick missed all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

The Rams waived him Tuesday. Kendrick goes directly onto Seattle’s 53-man active roster.

Griffin goes off it.

Shaquill Griffin’s summer

The 30-year-old cornerback the Seahawks drafted in the third round in 2017 signed in late June after being Minnesota’s fifth, nickel defensive back last season. Griffin missed from the second day of training through weeks away dealing with an undisclosed personal issue.

When he returned in late August, he performed well as a second-team cornerback behind starters Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen and Josh Jobe. Griffin was particularly good in the Seahawks’ joint practice last week in Green Bay. Facing Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love and front-liners in a seven-on-seven drill from the 6-yard line, Griffin broke up multiple passes. Coach Mike Macdonald praised his day after that practice.

It appeared Griffin was more than just a sage locker-room leader for a young secondary, a wise older man, a father of three kids under 3 years old now.

He could still be that on Seattle’s practice squad. The team may offer him a spot on that, as NFL rules now allow up to six of the 17 players on the practice squad to have more than two years of league service time.

But Griffin is not subject to waivers as a vested veteran so he’s a free agent available to sign with any team at any offer he likes.

General manager John Schneider said Griffin will be back.

“Yeah, he’ll stick around, for sure,” Schneider said following practice Wednesday.

“We love Shaq.”

Shaquill Griffin returned for a second go-round with the Seattle Seahawks. The 30-year-old veteran cornerback Seattle drafted in 2017 talked to reporters at NFL training camp Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025, at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.

Quinton Bohanna back

A day after they released him to make him a free agent, the Seahawks signed back Quinton Bohanna to their practice squad.

They only had two defensive tackles in the building before they did: Jarran Reed and Byron Murphy on the 53-man roster.

Bohanna, 25, was a starting nose tackle at 350 pounds during training camp. Veteran Johnathan Hankins remains out indefinitely with a back issue. Hankins, 33, hasn’t practiced since last season.

Bohanna is likely to be elevated from the practice squad for the opener against San Francisco Sept. 7. With how thin Seattle’s roster is at the position, Bohanna is on track for three elevations from the practice squad. That would then result by NFL rule in Seattle offering him a spot on its active roster, or releasing him back to free agency.

To further add at nose tackle the Seahawks signed back Brandon Pili to the practice squad the day after they waived him.

The other position of need on the defense is off-the-ball linebacker. The Seahawks are addressing that by agreeing to sign Chazz Surratt, a third-round pick by Minnesota in 2021. San Francisco released him into free agency Tuesday. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media was the first to report that Wednesday.

Asked about Surratt and the report of the agreement, Schneider said he could not comment about that.
