Tommy DeVito is headed to New England.
The folk hero quarterback and New Jersey native was claimed on waivers by the Patriots on Wednesday, formalizing the end to his romantic run with his hometown Giants.
DeVito failed to make the Giants’ 53-man roster — an uphill battle given the club had Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart’s names all written in permanent marker on the quarterback depth chart — but there was still hope he would end up as QB4 on the practice squad.
Not so. The three quarterbacks on the roster will be the only ones the Giants will carry, general manager Joe Schoen said Wednesday.
“We’d love to have him back,” Schoen said of DeVito. “He was claimed. We wish him all the best.”

Tommy Cutlets is at least guaranteed a roster spot for the first three weeks of the regular season as a result of being claimed off waivers.
The 27-year-old went 17-for-20 with three touchdown passes in the Giants’ preseason finale against the Patriots, which ended up being his last appearance for the team.
DeVito will be the third-string quarterback in New England, behind Drake Maye and Josh Dobbs on the depth chart.
That was the same role he originally occupied with the Giants before injuries forced him into the spotlight and he ran with it.

An undrafted free agent, DeVito set the town alight in 2023 by leading the Giants to three straight wins as their third-string quarterback after Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor got hurt.
The Italian Stallion and his agent, Sean Stellato, became local celebrities, with fans paying nearly $200 for DeVito’s autograph during his rookie season.
It couldn’t last forever, and it was never likely that DeVito would find a way to crack the depth chart with the Giants this season.
After a preseason in which DeVito and Dart were much of the focus, the spotlight now turns to Wilson — who Schoen reiterated Wednesday is the entrenched starter — ahead of the season opener at Washington.
Wilson, though, had some kind words to say about DeVito upon his departure.
“We just miss the Italian Stallion being in the room,” Wilson said. “I think Tommy has done a tremendous job, what he brought to the table every day at practice. I think obviously on the field, you always want your teammates to show out and do well, to get opportunities like he just got.
“We were actually FaceTiming him in between our meetings. We were hoping that he wasn’t gonna get picked up because we were like, ‘Come on.’ But at the same time, we really wanted him to [get an opportunity elsewhere]. We wanted him to be in our room, hopefully, but at the same time, we’re so excited.
“Obviously, he played well against the Patriots. They got to see what he was able to do. I know he’ll do well there. He’s got a really good organization over there and all that stuff. I think his mentality will be right there and he’ll do a great job. He’s a brother to us, and we’ll definitely miss him in our room.”
