The Washington Commanders announced their 53-man roster on Tuesday, and it included four running backs. The roster didn’t feature former starter Brian Robinson Jr., who was traded to the San Francisco 49ers last week.
Washington’s four running backs are Austin Ekeler, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Jeremy McNichols and rookie Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt. With four running backs on the 53-man roster, the Commanders didn’t include a running back on their first practice squad for 2025.

That changed shortly after Washington officially announced its practice squad on Wednesday. Ben Standig confirmed an earlier report that running back Donovan Edwards was signing with the Commanders’ practice squad.
Edwards, 23, played four years at the University of Michigan, where he rushed for 2,251 yards and scored 23 total touchdowns. Edwards was a key member of Michigan’s 2023 national championship alongside Washington star cornerback Mike Sainristil.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Edwards went undrafted in the 2025 NFL draft and signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. He had an excellent preseason, leading the Jets in rushing, but was waived during this week’s final cuts.

A cool fact about Edwards: He’s been on the cover of a video game. Edwards was one of the three players on the cover the popular EA Sports franchise, “College Football 25.”
