After claiming three players off waivers, the New York Jets quickly filled their practice squad — with names highly familiar to Jets fans. In total, the team inked 14 players to the squad, all of whom were with the team during training camp.

S Dean Clark

DB Jordan Clark

QB Brady Cook

WR Tyler Johnson

G Kohl Levao

K Harrison Mevis

DT Payton Page

WR Jamaal Pritchett

LB Jackson Sirmon

WR Quentin Skinner

LB Boog Smith

WR Brandon Smith

DL Eric Watts

G Leander Wiegand

Highlighting the group is undrafted free agent wide receiver Jamaal Pritchett, the shifty free agent whom many hoped would make the 53-man roster. Pritchett ultimately lost out to incumbent Xavier Gipson but will be waiting in the wings for his opportunity.

The other two standout receivers in the preseason, Brandon Smith and Quentin Skinner, also signed with the practice squad. As of now, the team has only five receivers on the 53-man roster, but they may have chosen to do so in part because they have four additional receivers they like on the practice squad.

Should new Jets pickup Jelani Woods be the instant TE2?

The Jets also snuck quarterback Brady Cook onto the squad. Cook showcased intriguing potential during his preseason stint with the Jets and is a valuable developmental player to have.

Other notable names include receiver Tyler Johnson, who was somewhat surprisingly released to make room for the waiver additions; guard Leander Wiegand from the International Player Pathway (IPP); edge rusher Eric Watts, who spent the 2024 season on the 53-man roster; undrafted free agent defensive tackle Payton Page; and safety Dean Clark, the son of long-time Steelers defensive back Ryan Clark.

Notable former Jets players who landed on other practice squads include Adrian Martinez (49ers), Malachi Corley (Browns), Carter Warren (Falcons), and Donovan Edwards (Commanders).

NFL teams are allowed to carry a maximum of 16 players on the practice squad plus one IPP player. Of those 16, six can be veterans, but the rest must have two or fewer accrued seasons.

The practice squad can become very important throughout the season. Teams can elevate up to two players from the squad to the active roster for each game. A player can be elevated a maximum of three times over the course of the season; after that point, they will need to be signed to the active roster to be activated on gameday.

The Jets went heavy on wide receiver on their squad while sprinkling in other positions. The practice squad will evolve over the course of the season, and perhaps even in the days leading up to Week 1.
