Donovan Edwards wasn’t out of a job for long. After getting waived by the New York Jets on Tuesday, the former Michigan running back signed with the Washington Commanders on Thursday.

Edwards will join Washington’s practice squad, the team announced, along with cornerback Darius Rush.

Edwards, who signed with the Jets after not getting drafted in April, led the team with 26 carries for 89 yards (and a touchdown) in the preseason and also caught four passes for 39 yards.

He was a popular player during his four years at Michigan, performing his best in some of the biggest games. Among his highlights: a 75-yard touchdown pass as a freshman in the 2021 Big Ten championship game; scored on runs of 75 and 85 yards in a 216-yard performance at Ohio State the next year; was the MVP of the Big Ten championship against Purdue the following week; had two 40-plus-yard touchdown runs as a junior in the national championship against Washington.

The West Bloomfield High School product was a team captain as a senior last year and finished his career with 19 rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns over 50 games. While Michigan credits him with 14 career starts, he was often behind other running backs like Blake Corum and, last season, Kalel Mullings.

The Commanders have four running backs on their 53-man roster: Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr.
