The Seattle Seahawks set their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, but it wasn’t long before they started making tweaks.

On Wednesday, the Seahawks claimed former Los Angeles Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick off waivers. They also have reportedly agreed to sign former New York Jets sign linebacker Chazz Surratt to their 53-man roster, although that move hasn’t become official yet.
What do those two players have in common? Both are former standout quarterbacks, as Brock Huard pointed out during Thursday’s Blue 88 segment on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk.
Surratt began his college career at quarterback, making seven starts as a true freshman at North Carolina before eventually switching to linebacker. Prior to that, he was a standout QB at East Lincoln High in Denver, N.C., where he earned Parade All-America Player of the Year honors after breaking the North Carolina state record for career total yardage.
Kendrick, meanwhile, was a standout quarterback at South Pointe High in Rock Hill, S.C. He led his team to back-to-back state titles and was the state Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.
Huard, a former NFL quarterback, said that QB experience no doubt benefits both players on the defensive side of the ball – especially with Surratt at linebacker.
“(Seahawks head coach) Mike Macdonald talks about the communication and intuition and everything that has to come at that linebacker position,” Huard said. “… Both of them can see the game and play the game through the lens of a quarterback and are very cerebral guys.”
