KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For openers, progress.
We have all Labor Day weekend to overanalyze this game. But Nebraska’s nerve-wracking 20-17 win over Cincinnati was the perfect opening game for the Huskers.
Because it was a victory.
Opening season success has been few and far between for this program in recent years. Consider: this was only the third victory in the last eight season openers for Nebraska.
The expectations can wait. So, too, can Michigan and USC and all the rest. This Husker team entered this season with much promise and many more questions.
It needed to answer the first call. Nebraska did that.
OK, it was more like survival. But that counts. And for a program learning how to stack wins and confidence, the way this played out couldn’t have gone better.

The Huskers, 1-0, were the better team most of the night. They had the majority of a sellout crowd of 72,884 cheering for them. It should have been easier.
And yet somehow, Nebraska was in a game of chicken with the Bearcats, who are not to be confused with the top contenders in the Big 12 Conference. Who would blink first?
When NU quarterback Dylan Raiola converted a fourth-and-two into a three-yard touchdown pass to Dane Key, it looked like NU had some breathing room at 20-10 with 10:36 left.
But there’s no comfort zone for Husker fans. And a Nebraska team that didn’t put the Bearcats away suddenly was on the ropes.
Because the defense was suddenly on skates. UC went 75 yards on nine plays, with quarterback Brendan Sorsby gashing NU twice on scrambles out of the pocket for 36 yards and Nebraska defenders couldn’t get a tackle. Just like that, Cincinnati was back to within 20-17.
After the Huskers drove to the UC 42 but stalled out, the Bearcats took over on their nine with 2:10 left. And it was time to see what this Blackshirts defense had in them.
Enough guts. And a playmaker in Malcolm Hartzog, who turned just in time to make a game-clinching interception in the end zone.
The roar from the Husker crowd was loud enough that you couldn’t hear them collectively exhale first.
On a night with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce in the house and on the scoreboard cameras, Nebraska somehow saved the best drama for the field. And lived to tell.
The way they won it should serve them well. It was a big growth moment for a program that has always found ways to lose games. This time, they found a way to win a game they absolutely had to have.
There were plenty of first-game mistakes to clean up. But also no shortage of positive developments to talk about on the way home.
Nebraska’s run game
Nebraska came out of the gate running the ball.
Emmett Johnson has come to play in 2025. The senior ran it 25 times for 108 yards and showed plenty of explosion, moves and some toughness.
Johnson ran behind some good holes, from an offensive line billed as older and deeper that showed out. Good start for the big boys.
Meanwhile offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen continues to go old-school, again taking a defensive lineman (this time Cameron Lenhardt) and putting him at fullback in short yards.
Also, there was tight end Heinrich Haarberg taking a couple snaps on “tush push” plays.
Holgorsen appeared to want to set a tone of running the ball and did just that.
Dylan Raiola was good; receivers drew headlines
Dylan Raiola was efficient (save for one fumble on a sack that he was lucky to recover) and made a key play with his legs. But it was the receivers who drew the headlines.
Dane Key is all that he was hyped to be. So, too, is Nyziah Hunter. Those two made big play after big play.
Luke Lindenmeyer was a reliable target at tight end.
These guys are going to be fun to watch.
Special teams win the night
Special teams won the night.
Transfer kicker Kyle Cunanan knocked a 52-yard field goal through the uprights early. Then followed up with a shorter 22-yarder.
That was a major development. So was freshman Archie Wilson’s solid 36.7 average on three punts, including pinning UC deep twice.
Mike Ekeler showed urgency, rotating kickoff specialists Tristan Alvano and John Hohl when they failed to reach the end zone. Cunanan was brought in and hit the end zone twice.
Also: I only counted one fair catch from Jacory Barney on three punt returns.
Again, progress. It was anywhere a Husker fan wanted to find it.
The best place was on the scoreboard.
