Returning to the practice field on Thursday for the Indianapolis Colts was safety Nick Cross.

Cross has been sidelined in recent weeks with a hip injury.

Earlier in the week, Shane Steichen expressed his confidence that Cross, along with wide receiver Josh Downs (hamstring), would be back to practice soon.

Downs returned to practice on Wednesday.

“I would expect them to be back next week for sure,” Steichen said on Monday via Locked on Colts. “They’re still working through it, but they’re all progressing really well.”

Cross put together a breakout season in 2024, taking over as the Colts‘ strong safety. He will again fill that role this season, but will now be paired with Cam Bynum.

The depth at safety is a bit of an unknown. While Rodney Thomas has starting experience, his role was significantly reduced last season. Daniel Scott hasn’t played a regular-season snap yet.

In this Lou Anarumo scheme, we can anticipate more three safety looks from the Colts, and I would venture to guess a lot more movement from this unit as well in this disguise-heavy system.

Along with getting Cross back, over the last week-plus, Kenny Moore, Jaylon Jones, Bernhard Raimann, Kwity Paye, and Alec Pierce all returned to practice.
