Awaiting a new contract extension, many questioned whether San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings would be active in training camp.
General manager John Lynch told reporters in Santa Clara on Wednesday that Jennings had requested a trade “a while ago” as had been previously reported.
In response to speculation that more than a calf injury has sidelined the receiver for most of training camp, Lynch said, “There’s a lot that goes into that.”
“Both things can be true, you know,” San Francisco’s general manager continued.
“He wants a new contract, and he’s got a hurt calf, so I think people want to assume one or the other. Both things can be true.”
Claiming that they’ve since “moved on from” his trade request, San Francisco is “hopeful” but unclear if Jennings will take the field in week one.
Combine his status with Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing, and suspended Demarcus Robinson, and the 49ers’ receiving room is looking thin.
Ricky Pearsall, Skyy Moore, and Marquez Vlades-Scantling are the only healthy wide receivers currently on their roster.
