WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Baylor fans, coaches, players and former players are pumped up for the return of the chrome helmet at the Bears season opener Friday night in a matchup against Auburn at McLane Stadium.
Baylor made the announcement about bringing back the iconic look on August 14th by releasing a video with former Baylor QB Bryce Petty, who wore the chrome.
“Look good, feel good, play good,” Petty said. “If you can’t feel good in that thing, then I don’t know really what you can feel good in. I know there was a lot of time and energy put into getting the look right. We’re going to play fast, and we’re going to win a lot in these things.”
Current Waco resident and Cromwell Commercial Group Partner Clay Fuller was a teammate with Petty.
Fuller played for the Bears from 2011-2015 where he won back-to-back Big 12 Championships in 2013 and 2014.

He was part of the first team to wear the chrome helmet in 2013.
The era of the chrome helmet is known as one of the most winning in Baylor history as the teams advanced to four straight bowl games and found themselves in contention for a national playoff spot.
Fuller said he was thrilled when he learned the look was coming back.
“Bringing back the chrome helmets,” Fuller said. “I know when we put them on 10 years ago, it was fresh. It was clean. There was lots of swagger in those helmets and I know those guys putting them on tonight are going to be just as excited, just as proud and they’re going to look just as good.”
Baylor Head Coach Dave Aranda shares in the excitement.
“It’s really cool to be part of bringing something back that carries so much meaning and reflects such an energized period in Baylor football,” Aranda said. “Seeing our student-athletes’ excitement, former players and our fans, it further fuels everything we’re about.”
2017 was the last year the helmet was worn until Friday.
Baylor kicks off in the chrome helmet at a fan black-out game in McLane Stadium at 7 p.m.
