With the preseason in the rearview mirror, it’s time to for the Houston Texans to turn their attention to the 2025 NFL regular season. As for fans, that means it’s time to take a look at Fantasy Football boards and make a call on which player will turn your roster into a contender overnight.
As Labor Day approaches and drafts begin, fans are overlooking depth charts, roster moves and potential sleepers who can turn their rosters from good to great. The Texans aren’t known for being filled with elite talent for the game on apps, but with a change of offensive personnel under Nick Caley, maybe there’s reason to believe times are changing at NRG Stadium.
Entering the year, Houston has several players who should be coveted in fantasy football drafts, mainly in the pass-catching department. With that in mind, here are five Texans players to target in an upcoming fantasy football draft:
5. TE Dalton Schultz
Last season, Schultz underwhelmed after earning a three-year, $33 million contract in 2023 for being C.J. Stroud’s security blanket. That was in a Bobby Slowik offense. This is with Nick Caley, who is known for his background with tight ends during his tenure with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams. The up-tempo passing game will force Stroud to release the ball quicker, thus meaning he’ll need to latch onto his targets within a three-step drawback.
That should lead to not only more targets for Schultz, but also more yards. He’s no longer a TE1 in leagues, but as a depth piece who could serve as a secondary option with injury and byes weeks, you could consider him as an option in the later rounds for your bench.
4. WR Jayden Higgins
The 34th overall pick is going to be a factor in the offense on the outside. How much? That’s still a mystery. Higgins has quickly developed trust with Stroud during team drills and his vertical speed could lead a slew of explosive plays on offense. Nico Collins is WR1 entering the season and Christian Kirk should have high upside in the slot. Most consider Higgins to be the third down in the passing game, so taking a flyer on the rookie in the later round could be a solid find.
3. QB C.J. Stroud
No one should benefit more from the arrival of Caley than Stroud, who still managed to throw for 20 scores and over 3,900 yards in Bobby Slowik’s offense. This is going to be a run-oriented offense, which is why Stroud appears at No. 3, but the explosive plays are going to hit. Look out for the third-year passer to thrive on early downs with deep shots that set up a cast of unknowns but promising targets downfield for first downs and scores.
2. WR Christian Kirk
Now serving as a No. 2 weapon, expect Kirk to see his target shares go up. He won’t be a 1,000-yard playmaker who punches in a touchdown every week, but it should be shocking to imagine a world where he’s averaging 6-8 catches per game for 60-70 yards. Those are valuable points for the flex option or first target off the bench.
1. WR Nico Collins
Expectations are high for Collins after two 1,00-yard campaigns in Bobby Slowik’s offense. When healthy, he remains not only a top five target in the league, but also a top 10 option in fantasy. Last season, Collins was on pace to lead the league in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns after averaging nine catches for 128 yards per game in five starts. If not for a hamstring injury, the Texans might have finished with a top-three record in the AFC and punched their ticket to their first ever conference championship.
The bottom line is that Collins can win at all three stages of the field. That’s going to give him advantages over every receiver in the room. The respect he commands on the field might limit him in some marquee matchups, so don’t take him with your first overall pick, but the upside is sensational enough to make him an early second-round selection. You will prosper by having Collins around your roster, as do the Texans.
