Georgia Southern will begin its bid for a Sun Belt Conference title on Saturday when it visits a Fresno State side that has already lost this season. The Bulldogs bungled their way to a 31-7 loss at Kansas in Week 0 and have plenty to work on as they make their 2025 home debut at Valley Children’s Stadium.
Things got off to a bright enough start for quarterback E.J. Warner, son of NFL Hall of Famer Kurt, in the trip to Kansas, where he went five-for-five and threw for 81 yards and a touchdown in the opening quarter. However, things quickly turned sour for the 21-year-old transfer out of Rice as he converted only 98 more yards and gave up three turnovers, failing to score in the remaining three quarters.
The Eagles are narrow 1.5-point favorites in what promises to be a tantalizing maiden matchup between these two schools. Fourth-year coach Clay Helton will be leaning on junior quarterback JC French to cut out some of the errors seen en route to an 8-5 record in 2024, having lost the New Orleans Bowl to Sam Houston State in last season’s finale despite racking up 126 yards more than the eventual winners.
Warner needs to see more from his backfield compared to last week, after the Bulldogs gained just 37 rushing yards off 27 carries against Kansas. If the hosts can make ground in that sector and Warner takes better care of the ball, there’s every chance the Bulldogs can upset Georgia Southern’s more experienced roster.
